Craft Counts

A campus plan to determine site location, a facility program to set an adequate budget and inform the concept, creative skills to conceive and describe the designs, and experience to carry the work forward to implementation - these are the fundamental steps in achieving accomplished campus architecture. And the craft of construction counts, too. Praise then generations of masons, with skills evident in Brown University's 1889 Victorian masterwork (top view) and their modern counterparts at Yale's Morse College (bottom view). These contrasting examples of intricacy and simplicity demonstrate competencies not to be overlooked in assessing how illustrious designs come into being.
