Why
Not a Gate?
"Great
welcome makes a merry feast", so wrote the Bard.
The
campus feast might be a prospective student and parent at one end of the
time scale and an alumnus returning for reunion at the other. In between
are all those activities and events that animate everyday campus life.
Entering and leaving campus can be a symbolic moment as well as quotidian
passage to classroom, work, or event place. Along the campus boundary,
a gate can communicate welcome emblematically and functionally. Gate design
can help reinforce a sense of place.
A
design such as the Brown University gate with its view to the Green evokes
traditional New England. The gateway at Santa Fe Community college is
constructed with shapes, materials, and the use of colors that are reminders
of the region's culture and history.
