Pedestrian Routes

Here are some fundamental principles: separation of pedestrian traffic from automobile traffic, walkway widths sufficient for three people abreast, grades no more than 3.5 percent where possible, stable surfaces, curb cuts for the handicapped, sufficient lighting for safety, and attractive greenery on both sides of the right-of-way.

Exceptions can generate some visually interesting campus designs. Thus some of the campus walks at Ohio State University planned and designed to accommodate bicycle traffic, also include sitting areas and bicycle racks.

At William and Mary, the pedestrian right-of-way through the woods connecting two campus sectors, is paved with bricks - an emblematic gesture to a material long associated with the institution's classical and modern interpretations of Collegiate Georgian architecture and landscape.
